Research Interests
Cancer chemotherapy, pharmacogenetics, drug metabolism, carcinogenesis, cancer chemoprevention, drug interactions, toxicology, cytochrome P450, aldehyde dehydrogenases, aldo-keto reductases and pharmacokinetics are all terms that could be appropriately used as headings to catalog the research conducted in my laboratory for the past nearly 40 years. The bulk of our effort has been in the area of cancer chemotherapy, induction of drug metabolizing enzymes and drug resistance/collateral sensitivity. Identifying the molecular determinants of cellular sensitivity to cyclophosphamide and other oxazaphosphorines, and translating this knowledge into the rational, individualized clinical treatment of breast and other cancers, is the current major area of interest. Our studies are conducted at several levels, viz., cell-free systems, cultured tumor cells, tumor-bearing rodents and humans. In recent years, a multidisciplinary, viz., pharmacology, pharmacogenetic, immunology, chemistry, biology and clinical medicine, approach to the solution of our research problems has been utilized whenever possible. |
