Research Interests

Dr. Dunham's research in cardiovascular pharmacology is focused primarily on two lines of investigation that seek to define mechanisms involved in the kidney's regulation of blood pressure via the biosynthesis and release of vasoactive substances. First, experiments are being conducted to determine whether endothelial factors such as nitric oxide are responsible for the release of an uncharacterized, hypotensive renomedullary lipid, medullipin, that occurs upon elevation of renal perfusion pressure.

Second, using cell culture techniques, the laboratory is investigating endothelial cell/juxtaglomerular cell interactions that may be involved in the control of renin release from juxtaglomerular cells. Of particular interest are studies concerning mechanisms whereby endothelial cell-derived factors such as adenosine, nitric oxide, and endothelin modulate renin release.
