Research InterestsDr. Holtzman's laboratory has long been interested in a variety of biochemical problems in drug metabolism and drug toxicity. In particular, they have been concerned with the activation of toxic agents by the cytochrome P-450 system. They are also examining the glutathione-dependent biochemical mechanisms whereby the cell repairs the damage produced by toxic agents that are activated by the cytochrome P-450 system. These studies include the purification of the protective enzymes and their characterization by standard biochemical, immunological, and molecular biological techniques. Neurons have developed a complex system to maintain calcium homeostasis. Drugs targeted to specific components of this system are useful tools for studying signaling processes, have profound effects on synaptic transmission and may prove to be effective neuroprotective agents. |
