Application Instructions

 

New students accepted into the Graduate Program in Pharmacology begin their studies in the Fall Semester. Some may begin working in laboratories even earlier. To receive full consideration for financial support, applications should be submitted by January 15.

Please note that you must fulfill all application requirements, including payment of the application fee, before your application is considered complete.  Incomplete applications will not be reviewed.

Please read and follow these instructions to prepare your application. It is important to send application materials to the proper places. There are two steps to the application process. Certain items must be sent to the Graduate School Admissions Office and others are sent directly to the Graduate Program in Pharmacology.

 

Detailed Application Instructions

I. The following materials should be mailed directly to:

a) The Graduate School now requires prospective students to complete the Graduate School Application for Admission online. For more information, visit the Graduate School website: http://www.grad.umn.edu/

b) Application Fee -- applications are not complete and will not be reviewed until the fee is paid. Instructions for payment options are included as part of the online Graduate School Application process.

c) Official transcripts from each undergraduate or graduate institution you have attended.

Note: Official transcripts bear the original signature of the registrar and impression seal of the issuing institution. If your school does not issue official transcripts, refer to the Graduate School's instructions on what is acceptable for a substitute. Applications will not be processed until the Graduate School receives acceptable transcripts.

d) Official scores on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) if English is not your native language. (ETS should send the official scores to institution code: 6874)

e) A personal statement of goals explaining your immediate and long-range occupational objectives in relation to your major field, being specific about your area of interest.

f) Current registration information, if you are currently enrolled at an academic institution. List all courses you expect to complete as part of your present program. Include department, course number, descriptive title and number of credits for each course.

II. The following materials should be mailed directly to:

a) Complete the Required Fellowship Form online at: http://www.pharmacology.med.umn.edu/ (Please use the paper form only if you are unable to apply online: download PDF form)

b) Personal Statement of Goals (view the Pharmacology Graduate Program Diversity Statement)

c) Curriculum Vitae (include work history and any research/teaching experience)

d) Copies of transcripts from each undergraduate or graduate institution you have attended (they need not be official) or a record of the courses you have completed and the grades you received.

e) Arrange to have three letters of recommendation sent on your behalf (list names of your references in the appropriate field on the required fellowship form). Your references should be familiar with your work and able to appraise your probability of success in our program. There is no special form for the letters of recommendation. Your references need simply write a letter on the stationery of their institution, addressed to the Director of Graduate Studies. Do NOT use the online letters of recommendation system when completing your Graduate School Application. Letters must be sent from the recommender to the Pharmacology Department.

f) Your scores on the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) general test. Official scores should be sent to institution code: 6874, department code: 0216. Please include a photocopy of your score notification to be used until ETS sends the official reports. The Pharmacology Graduate Program accepts paper-based and computer-based GRE scores for exams taken within the past 5 years.

IMPORTANT NOTE for International students from the People's Republic of China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Korea:

The GRE is comprised of two steps: a computerized analytical writing test and a paper verbal/quantitative exam. You must take the GRE analytical writing test between July and September in order to have scores reported in time for Fall. The paper test is given in October. You must register to take the paper GRE exam before September.
